In my random reading on the subject complexity as expressed in the brilliant simulation – The Game of Life, by the late mathematician John Conway, I came upon this Master’s Thesis – Complexity Properties of the Cellular Automaton Game of Life (pdx.edu)

This truly insightful work would qualify as a doctoral dissertation, in my opinion. The author is Andreas Rechsteiner of Portland State University (11.14.95).
